Let’s talk pets, traveling with dogs that is!

Learning to travel with a dog again!

How do y’all travel with your pet? Do you have a dog or a cat? Do they lay in a crate? Do they hang out the window? Do they have a favorite spot?

Years ago, I had a dog named Dodge (yep, that was his name). He was an older gentleman and did not travel well, so I usually just got a dog sitter and called it a day. After his passing, it took about 1.5 years to decide if I wanted to get another dog. There was a lot of internal struggle... could I fit an animal in my life with my schedule (I work long, odd hours), what type of dog would suit my needs, would he or she make a good traveling partner, etc. The sheer thought of it gave me anxiety, but if it worked out to where this dog would travel well, it also gave me a blanket of extra protection on the road.

One fateful February morning, I saw an adorable picture of a dog named Birdie at the local shelter. I met her and thought…. I think she’s the one. About 1.5 months after adopting her, my friend Kelly and I had our first road trip with Birdie and the awesome patch crew. To my surprise, she really loved it.

Packing for this trip, I made sure to bring her crate, (which she loves) but it does take up a lot of room. So tell me what are y’all’s tips.

I’m doing my own research as I want to include a crate in my build for full time travel with Birdie. Money is def where most lie as budgets go, and WOW! Some crates are expensive but seem totally worth it when comes to the safety of a pet and travel. I have recently bought a new travel crate for Birdie and we will be trying it out soon.

I chose a slim crate to fit the space for now. It gives Bird the room to move, stretch, and lie down while keeping her safe! I am saving for the one I eventually would like to buy ($600 crate) for the full on build out of my Bronco. It will be a few years to create plans and to find the right builders to build the perfect camping rig!

Newest travel crate.

I’m always evolving every trip I take and enjoying this travel life with my pet! Can't wait to see what the future holds!
